The Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) at the University of Hawai’i-Mānoa (UHM) is glad to announce Luce Undergraduate or Graduate Fellowships. The fellowships are available for undergraduate students, graduate students. The scholarship program is designed to assist students in achieving their educational needs.

Provided By:

CSEAS is one and only eight National Resource Centers (NRC) for the study of Southeast Asia in the United States as funded by the US Department of Education. It is an administrative center that serves as a coordinating body for the study of Southeast Asia throughout the University of Hawaiʻi.

Eligibility:

Eligibility required for Luce Graduate Field Study Fellowships:

  • The scholarships are for advanced language study or research in Southeast Asia.
  • Applicants must be full-time, classified graduate students at UH Mānoa at the time of the application.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
  • Applicants must have at least two years of an SEA language or equivalent and must have a demonstrated commitment to the study of Southeast Asia.

Eligibility required for Luce Undergraduate fellowship:

  • The scholarships are for first-year language study; applicants do not need prior Southeast Asian language experience.
  • Applicants must be full-time, classified US permanent resident undergraduate students at UH-Mānoa (UHM) at the time of the application.
  • Applicants must have or intend to declare a major or minor in Asian Studies (SEA focus) or a related field and demonstrate a commitment to the study of Southeast Asia.

Supporting Documents:

Luce Undergraduate Fellowship:

  • Online application form (must be completed in one sitting, no save and return function).
  • A personal statement outlining your interest in Southeast Asia (less than 500 words)
  • Two email addresses of individuals who will complete a separate online reference form. References will receive separate emails with directions on how to complete your online recommendation.
  • A copy of your UHM transcripts uploaded to the application form as a pdf.

Luce Graduate Field Study Fellowship:

  • Online application form (must be completed in one sitting, no save and return function).
  • Personal statement outlining your language study or research plan in Southeast Asia (space provided on the application, max 1000 words).
  • Location/duration of language program/research abroad & estimated budget
  • 2 letters of recommendation from UH faculty (preferably from those who have taught the applicant recently and are acquainted with the proposed language/research project). Applicant should copy the reference letter url above and send it to your reference writer.
  • A copy of your STAR UHM transcripts uploaded to the application form as a pdf.

Award Amount:

  • Luce Graduate Field Study fellowship will provide $6,000.
  • Luce Undergraduate fellowship will provide $6,500.
